CREATIVE TEAMED!

Alternatively titled, “We Can’t ALL Join Simone’s New Birds of Prey”

This news out of Wondercon last weekend has left me filled with anger and anxiety. Not directed at Mr Rucka, who explains his decision a bit more here–I wish him the best of luck and I’m sure I’ll enjoy reading his future projects. But DC has a terrible track record with characters, especially female characters, who lose the creator who actually cares about them. Kate and Renee are hands-down two of my favorite fictional characters, and the idea of them being left to twist in the wind fills me with a generalized, sinking dread.

This comes on top of several other recent announcements from DC about creative shake-ups for books/characters I was interested in, which are bound to lead to either a) sucking or b) cancellation (or in the case of Power Girl, given her sales figures, probably a little of column A, followed by column B). And while there are, sadly, many women who could be greeting our doomed little cohort, poor, wrongly-maligned Cassandra Cain, the erst-while Batgirl, seemed the poster child for exactly the sort of fate I hope desperately does not befall these characters.

Now, I want to be wrong about this. I pray that some decent writers who give a shit pick up the ball here–I know they exist–and that the editors don’t make bone-headed decisions. Or at the very least let the characters lie fallow, their lives, bodies, and reputations unsullied.

As a side note, more regular Angry Wall fare will return soon, and I’ll likely juggle the archive dates to keep the story all together. But I had to create this and put it up now, for the sake of my own sanity.
